WATER SHORTAGE UK!
It’s Water Saving Week, 17-21 May
71% of the Earth is covered by water, but climate change, population growth and changes in lifestyle are increasingly putting pressure on our water supplies. Waterwise (an independent, not-for-profit organisation focused on reducing water consumption in the UK) estimates that our fresh water supplies will decline by half by 2050, unless we do something about it. And our industry is well placed to help do something about it. Although a third of all the water supplied in the UK is used outside of the home – in shops, gyms, restaurants, schools etc, and is responsible for a 28 million kg of CO2 emissions every month, we can still be more water efficient at home, and our industry is well placed to help customers do just that.
An efficient showerhead could reduce household bills by up to £120 a year and fixing a leaky loos could save around 400 litres of clean water a day, the equivalent of having extra two people living in your house. As around 20% of a typical gas heated home’s heating bill is from the water for showers, baths and the hot water tap, making these inexpensive changes will not only help the planet, but those facing water and energy poverty too. On your next appointment, why not ask your customers if you can help them save some money, energy and water?
Who knew that Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s line ‘Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink’ would be striking a chord over 200 years after his Rime of the Ancient Mariner was published?
